It had been a very rewarding journey to get where we are now..
We had come to the end of our paediatric training while working at Royal Darwin Hospital, and while the public hospital paediatric department was world class, the private paediatric services in Darwin were very limited. The outpatient waiting list was extremely long and parents of children with private health cover were shouting out for better private inpatient and outpatient care for their children.
Private obstetricians were relying on paediatricians from the public hospital to cover the newborn care of their patient’s babies. This was frustrating for the obstetricians, but also put extra pressure on the public hospital, which was already under strain to optimise its service provision to public patients.
We noticed that many experienced and talented registrars were being forced to leave the Territory as we were not able to provide jobs for them at the end of their training. In order to retain them in the territory, we needed to create positions that enabled Paediatricians to work part time in both the public and private sectors.
For the best care, the both the private and public hospitals really need to have a symbiotic relationship. This is created by our doctors having appointments within both institutions. We have achieved this, and have reduced wait lists to the shortest they have been in years. This has resulted in better care of territory children.
Since opening in 2014, Darwin Paediatrics has always strived for optimising healthcare for all children living in the NT.
Darwin Paediatrics has five General paediatricians, two paediatric surgeons and one paediatric gastroenterologist, who all do sessions in our outpatient rooms, located on the ground floor of the private hospital.
Darwin Paediatrics cares for newborns born by normal vaginal delivery or caesarean section. We also service the level 2B Special Care Nursery for babies older than 32 weeks gestation.
In 2014 Darwin Paediatrics introduced a Cardiac Screening Test for all babies prior to being discharged home from Darwin Private Hospital.
This year, we introduced High Flow Oxygen and Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) respiratory support to the Special Care Nursery for babies who would have previously required transfer to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Darwin Private Hospital also opened the private paediatric ward. Darwin Paediatrics Paediatricians are on call 24 hours, seven days a week to oversee care of all paediatric admissions. Our team are motivated and dedicated to continue to improve paediatric care to children of the Top End!
We look forward to welcoming your family to our practice.
